What happened to Funny?

Many people on New Year's Eve make resolutions, including myself that we usually break sometimes before January is even over.  This year I decided to make a resolution that was not about weight loss or exercise but more for my mental health.  I decided 2011 is going to be the year that I return to laughter.  I want to laugh more and worry less.  There is my son and my big golden retriever that definitely make me laugh, but I also rely on comedies to make me laugh.

So I was excited this week to have some of my favorite shows back from having their December hiatus.  One show that usually brings the laughter is How I met your Mother.  This show especially Neil Patrick Harris will make me laugh out loud.  So Monday night when I tuned into this weeks episode I was really not happy with the show.  At the end of the show one of the main character's father dies and I sat there and thought why in the world is this called a comedy and this is not making me feel good.

Then last night another show that usually also makes me laugh is Cougar Town, where they also decided to have one of the main characters depressed about all the bad stuff that is going on in our world.  The exact reason why I no longer watch the news, so why would I want to watch it on a comedy.  I totally understand when on news programs or dramas certain subjects including death are not avoided, but while watching a comedy I expect to have laughter not to wind up crying at the end of the show.

Did the writers of these shows forget who their audience is, did the forget that they are writing a comedy, what in the world were they thinking?  At least Two and Half Men stuck to their comedy roots, and made me laugh on Monday night, same with Modern Family last night.
